HISTORY EPOS AS A MULTIMEDIA STORY APP FOR TABLETS

Axel Springer has raised the standards in the publishing world with the tablet app “EPOS” wich is a knowledge and history magazine. In its first issue, EPOS Magazine tells the story of the First World War which was researched in cooperation with the Deutsches Historisches Museum (DHM). Through interactive infographics, text-based video and audio files and tasteful graphics, a masterpiece of digital storytelling has emerged. Thanks to Purple DS®, the app has been implemented within a short time by the editors themselves and without programming. This project sets a new high standard for the quick and easy implementation of multimedia apps using a digital publishing suite.

The app dips into the possibilities granted by mobile devices and adds a new interactive layer onto classical digital storytelling elements such as words, pictures, videos and audio. The user receives complete control over the temporal course of the story through the touchscreen. By scrolling the scene backwards or forwards, the user decides freely over the blending in or out of digital elements, the start and stop of videos or audio sequences as well as animations, which are placed at specific locations in the story. The user can also jump through the individual chapters.

The app was realized by 4 editors within 3 month

EPOS Magazine was implemented using the Purple DS® Publishing Suite, with which designers, authors, journalists, publishers and other creatives can create smooth, high quality interactive stories. As the first project of its kind, Purple DS® was constantly developed further during the three-month-long production phase. As of now, however, all function such as the user-controlled animations are integrated into Purple DS® by default in the template STORYLINE and can be used for further issues or similar projects from the start. This means new projects only need to create the content.

The story starts with a contemporary image of the Brandenburg Gate and switches to a historical photo of the exact same location in 1913 once the reader starts scrolling, so that he begins to immerse himself in the past.

Based on a timeline and a map, this animation visualizes the facts about the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, which directly led to the declarations of war starting the First World War. The reader can choose the speed of the animation and the reading progress as both is based on scrolling.
