Development of a fully integrated digital certification platform
With Certinova, a digital platform has been created that is redefining the market for certifications in the area of Internal Control Systems (ICS). SPRYLAB developed a comprehensive certification platform for Certinova that digitally maps the entire process from customer registration through structured data collection to final evaluation. The central challenge: to create a globally unique ICS certification that combines professional depth with modern technology while meeting the highest requirements for quality, security, and transparency. The solution is relevant for companies across all industries that want to transparently demonstrate their compliance standards and strengthen the trust of their stakeholders.
ICS audits are currently too complex and expensive for many companies, and their results are also not publicly visible. At the same time, there is a legal requirement to establish and maintain an effective ICS, which is often neglected by companies and auditors—a situation that makes both sides uncomfortable. Dr. Oliver Bungartz, founder of Certinova, describes the initial situation: “An ICS certification is so far unique in the global market and offers many advantages for companies compared to or in addition to an ICS audit. The challenge was to connect professional depth and recognized standards with modern technology in such a way that quality, security, and transparency are guaranteed.” With over 20 years of experience, Bungartz is one of the leading experts in ICS and compliance and has shaped international compliance frameworks for global companies in senior positions at leading auditing firms and published the standard work on ICS in German-speaking countries.
From the beginning, Certinova wanted to enable companies to demonstrate their compliance regarding controls externally through a simplified and accelerated ICS certification. Companies should receive recognized, transparent proof of ICS appropriateness and effectiveness, benefit from reduced audit efforts, strengthen their governance, and more easily build trust with stakeholders.
For this project, Certinova was looking for a technology partner who not only masters the technical implementation but also brings the expertise to translate complex professional requirements into an intuitive digital solution. The platform should digitally map the entire certification process: from product selection and registration through structured data collection using best practice-based questionnaires to evaluation by analysts and the awarding of quality seals. The highest requirements for data security and GDPR compliance had to be met, as sensitive company information is processed.
The long-term vision: Certinova should become the globally recognized standard rating platform for ICS—comparable to providers like EcoVadis in the field of sustainability. The rating could be expanded in the future to related topics such as risk management, compliance, and corporate governance.
In the decision-making process, SPRYLAB prevailed over other providers. Particularly the ability to quickly grasp complex professional requirements and translate them into technical solutions convinced Certinova. The SPRYLAB project team developed a comprehensive platform architecture: The frontend is based on React and offers companies an intuitive interface for answering questionnaires. A Nest.js backend controls API communication and processes data stored in a PostgreSQL database. For management by Certinova analysts, Directus was integrated as a backend system that enables the configuration of questionnaires, evaluation of responses, and management of certifications. The landing page was realized with Webflow. The entire infrastructure is hosted in the German cloud and meets the highest security standards.
A technical challenge was the implementation of the evaluation logic. The platform enables complete weighting across the entire hierarchy including components, principles (questions), attributes (answer options), and free-text answers are also included in the evaluation. This demanding mathematics had to be translated into a system that remains manageable for users while delivering precise, reproducible results.
Certinova relied on an MVP approach to first test the innovative business model in the market—a proven approach for new digital products. The platform was designed to functionally map the complete certification process, while further optimizations such as a fully customized frontend are planned for later development stages. This pragmatic approach enabled a quick launch and the collection of real customer experiences. SPRYLAB’s project management convinced with clear planning and consistent cost control.
The Certinova platform went live on schedule and is already being used by numerous companies of various sizes. The first projects show high user satisfaction and smooth processes. Gregor Strobl, founder of Certinova, confirms: “The feedback has been exclusively positive so far. Especially the user-friendliness, the transparency of the process, and the efficient workflow are emphasized.” The range of users extends from medium-sized companies to globally operating corporations. A medium-sized company used the Certinova certification to strengthen the trust of investors and business partners, creating the basis for new opportunities and strategic growth. Other companies use the assessments as a strategic tool to specifically develop their ICS further and ensure their long-term compliance.
The digital solution meets the set goals: Companies can now demonstrate their ICS compliance simply, quickly, and cost-effectively. The structured process saves time and resources compared to traditional audits. The transparency of the evaluation process creates trust with stakeholders, and the quality seals provide visible proof of compliance excellence. From a product perspective, the successful balance between professional complexity and user-friendliness is particularly convincing.
The Certinova certification also offers additional benefits for auditors: The independent assessment can serve as a reference in financial statement audits, reducing the effort for their own control tests and increasing audit efficiency.
Certinova plans to further expand the platform with additional functions and the integration of artificial intelligence. Capacity should be optimized to enable the targeted global coverage in the area of ICS certification smoothly. In the medium term, the frontend could be completely redeveloped to further improve the user experience. An expansion to related compliance areas such as risk management, compliance, or corporate governance standards is also conceivable.
